These contaminants are often invisible but penetrate deep into the respiratory tract. Using a suitable cartridge mask helps to limit the inhalation of these substances and protect the health of the worker in the long term.

Different CE standards for respiratory masks

The CE marking and the classification of filters (A for organic solvents, P1/P2/P3 for particles, etc.) make it possible to clearly identify the level of protection provided by each painting mask.

The different types of filtration and the different types of masks

There are two main categories of filtration: particle filtration and gas/vapour filtration.

Particle filters trap dust and mist, whilst activated carbon cartridges capture solvents and harmful gases. Combined filters provide dual protection.

Half-masks are preferred for their versatility and modularity, whilst full-face masks provide enhanced protection in high-risk environments. The choice of respirator therefore depends on the nature of the products used and the level of exposure.

Using a respirator for painting

A respirator only fulfils its purpose fully if it fits correctly. The half-mask must fit the face perfectly to prevent any air leaks.

The straps must be adjusted precisely: if they are too tight, they cause discomfort; if they are too loose, they compromise the seal. Before each use, it is recommended that you check the condition of the valves and ensure the cartridges are securely fitted.

When spray painting, the cartridge respirator must be worn continuously throughout the application phase and the initial drying period.

Some safety guidelines for painting safely with a respirator

Wearing a painter’s mask does not exempt you from complying with general safety rules. Ventilation of the room remains essential: a cartridge mask filters the air but is no substitute for an effective extraction system.

Cartridges have a limited lifespan and must be replaced as soon as any noticeable odours are detected. It is also recommended to use the respirator in conjunction with other PPE: safety goggles, solvent-resistant gloves and suitable overalls.
